Pressure Measurement
Fiber optic pressure sensors based on Bragg gratings offer a compact, lightweight tool for accurate measurements, even at pressures as high as 1000 psi. Remote pressure monitoring is simplified by the low signal loss of fibers, meaning the light signal from a sensor can be transmitted several miles. Additionally, fiber optic sensors are virtually immune to the effects of electromagnetic interference and produce none themselves, making them safe for use around sensitive or high-powered electronics.
A very significant advantage is the ability to multiplex fiber optic sensors, so that several sensors are placed on one fiber optic line. For example, a pressure sensor could be spliced with a humidity and a temperature sensor to monitor environmental conditions. This significantly enhances the versatility of the sensors and reduces the complexity and number of leads in complex sensor systems.
