Humidity and Moisture Sensors

One of the more recent developments by Blue Road Research is an optical fiber humidity sensor. These sensors are much smaller and lighter than current neutron sensors. They maintain the same benefits of other optical fiber sensors with their high resistance to electromagnetic interference and ability to be multiplexed with other sensors on the same fiber. The low signal loss in fiber optics means that sensors can be placed up to several miles from their demodulators, making inexpensive, distributed, wide area sensor networks feasible.

By combining a moisture sensor with a temperature sensor, it was possible to create a relative humidity sensor that eliminates temperature effects. Further refinement of this design enabled soil moisture content using a fiber optic sensor probe. These sensors are ideal for remote monitoring applications.

The following published papers provide examples of some of our previous work with moisture sensors, in addition to discussion on the principles behind the sensors.
