Structural Girder Impact Test

Damage Assessment

Until recently, damage assessment has been largely based on visual inspection or costly ultrasound or x-ray techniques, and results have been difficult to quantify. Fiber optic based sensors provide a way to produce meaningful results from a relatively low-cost system.

Building sensors into a critical piece of hardware offers a method of allowing a detailed and meaningful inspection to be conducted at any time. It also allows real-time monitoring of operating systems, providing warning of the onset of failure, thereby increasing safety. The technology has already shown itself beneficial in civil and aerospace applications and further uses are easily possible.

The following published papers provide examples of some of our previous work with damage assessment, in addition to discussion on the principles behind the sensors.
